Sandstone in dune field
by Andreas Paul
This outcrop is at the northern border of the Rub Al Kali desert of the Arabian peninsula. Surrounded by quartz-dominated, carbonate-rich dunes, this very lightly cemented sandstone is of grey colour, contains quartz and other grains of mostly magmatic origin. It is part of an ancient dune system, the relics of which can be found all over the emirate of Abu Dhabi.
