King penguins taking off?

Avatar

by Etienne Pauthenet, Meteorology Department (MISU) Stockholm University, Stockholm, Sweden

Two King penguins are walking/gliding against the westerly wind of 30 m/s here, to get back from the ocean to their colony at Cap Ratmanoff. It is located at the very East of the Kerguelen islands, in the latitude band of the Roaring Forties.
