Logging the changes.
by Mary Gagen, Swansea University, Great Britain
The remaining primary rainforest in Sabah, Borneo is now all under the protection of conservation areas. This is a huge achievement. However, Malaysia has practiced low impact logging for decades such that there are now large areas of secondary forest. The biodiversity value of these areas is only just being measured and monitored and may well be very high. These valuable areas, however, are most at risk from conversion to oil palm plantation as their secondary status does not afford them any legal protection from clearance currently.
