Stone forest in Yunan
by Lixin Wu
The stone forest in She Lin Geopark, Yunan, China, is one of the most outstanding works of planet Earth in process of geological evolution. The formation of this Karst landscape originated from the upraise and erosion of marine deposited limestone of thickness more than hundred meters. The horizontally bedded carbonate rock, cut by several groups of vertical cracks into many many parts, got erosion from water and organisms. With the development of erosion in millions of years, different rock parts got separated and many stone walls and/or pillars got formed gradually. Finally, the assembling of stone walls and/or pillars in a large area(N24°38′~24°58′, E103°11′~103°29′)looks like a dark forest.
