Waves in stratocumulus clouds over the southeast Atlantic
Waves (potentially gravity waves) were omnipresent in the stratocumulus cloud fields observed during the ORACLES (ObseRvations of Aerosols above CLouds and their intEractionS) campaign in the southeast Atlantic Ocean. Often eating away at cloud deck edges, they posed a challenge in flight operations, setting up a race with the NASA P-3 aircraft to see if it could sample the clouds before they thin or disappear altogether. The haziness around the horizon is due to smoke produced largely by agricultural fires on the southern African continent.
