The shepherd and the water
by Francesco Bregoli, Institute of Water and Wetland Research, Department of Environmental Science, Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands
Close to the border of Serengeti, Tanzania, a shepherd observes the water flowing. The Mara River is the only water resource for him and millions of people, livestock and wild animals living in this semi-arid climate. Yet, deforestation, gold mining, water abstraction and climate change endanger the riverine habitat. Raise awareness to the population is the only way to preserve this irreplaceable resource. The challenge is on.
