A fisherman nimbly paddling into a tunnel of papyrus
by Francesco Bregoli, Institute of Water and Wetland Research, Department of Environmental Science, Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands
A fisherman is paddling with his dugout canoe into the papyrus swamp of the Mara Wetland, Tanzania. The wetland provides essential ecosystem services to a wide community, but nowadays it is endangered by deforestation, gold mining, climate changes and water abstraction. Create awareness to water users and local communities is necessary to preserve this fundamental habitat. The challenge is on.
