Another brick in the wall
by Juan Carlos Prieto, Seville, Spain
This photo was taken during a trip to Almaden de la plata. It shows the old marble quarry that lies abandoned nowadays.
Near to this place in the Covachos hill there is an ancient roman quarry that was used to extract marble as well.

The adjective "de la Plata" (silver) in the local name refers to other metals that were extracted here by romans, such as iron, copper and silver. Also quicksilver, which was used as an amalgam for gold and silver. In addition to the dehesa, is an example of landscape modified by human activity since ancient times. Nice photo!
