by Helen Glaves
Dún Briste at Downpatrick Head in Co. Mayo, Ireland was formed in 1939 when the arch connecting it to the mainland collapsed during a storm. This 45-metre tall sea-stack is composed of Lower Carboniferous fine-grained shales and sandy limestones, indicating deposition in a marine environment.
