The fingerprint of an Arctic river
by Mariasilvia Giamberini, National Council of Research, Pisa, Italy
This "abstract" picture has been taken from the small aircraft that links the scientific base of Ny Alesund, Spitzbergen, to the "town" of Longyearbyen and then to the European mainland. We just took off when the magnificence of the landscape from above revealed itself, showing unseen colours. The Bayelva river is rich in ferric iron sediments that make possible to see the stream of the river merging into the sea at the mouth of the fjord. The small white dots in the picture are the few small icebergs still remaining, as at the end of summer the sea ice was almost completely melt (picture shot on August, 29 2018).
