Holuhrauns own weather system
by Helga Kristín Torfadóttir, Reykjavík, Iceland
The Holuhraun lava field in Iceland formed in 2014-2015. The effusive eruption made a large lava flow that reached 85 square km which is larger than Manhattan. Here we see the warm surface of the lava flow creating its own weather system with its small tornadoes and the blue haze of sulphur emission.
