Artificial rainfall experiment in the Swiss Alps

Avatar

by Fabian Maier

The video shows an artificial rainfall experiment on a moraine in the proglacial area of the Griessfirn in Switzerland. It was conducted within the larger scope of the HILLSCAPE project, which investigates the coevolution of vegetation, soil and hydrology of hillslopes during landscape evolution. The video shows a rainfall event with the intensity of 40 mm/hr, which represents a strong event with a return period of only 30 years in this area. At the bottom of the slope, a runoff construction equipped with sensors allows to determine surface runoff, subsurface runoff, sediment transport processes and erosion rates in response to the rainfall.
