Unfrozen in time - a droplet of melt forms and hangs.
by Steven Gibbons, NGI, Oslo, Norway
The most ordinary of processes happens over a huge range of spatial and temporal scales. As far as I could see, a layer of snow over lichen-covered rock was diminishing. Imperceptibly to the human concentration span but, for any randomly chosen point on this front of snow, a droplet of melt could be seen. Each at a different stage, each one would grow until breaking a threshold and falling. So many of the processes shaping the Earth happen on so many different scales and looking at the droplet felt like looking into a lens.
