Night at the base of the Kanchendzonga
The tall peak of Kanchendzonga (Kanchenjunga) is prominently visible from different parts of the Indian states of West Bengal and Sikkim. The photograph was taken from Lamuney (~4300 m, Sikkim), one of the most spectacular locations to observe the snowclad peak. Lamuney is the last campsite for the high altitude Himalayan trek of Goecha La (La means mountain pass), a scenic trek through the Kanchendzonga National Park. This trekking trail mostly follows along the river Prek (visible in the image) that originates from a glacial lake near Goecha La. On a clear and chilly night full of stars, a view of the third highest peak of the world on the bank of Prek is a lifetime experience.
