Charred Wood in the Snow
by Gabriel Sigmund, Environmental Geosciences - Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science - University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria
A snow covered charred black pine tree trunk that burned in the 2021 forest fire in the Austrian Rax-Schneeberg mountain region. Such pyrogenic carbon formed in fires can remain stable in the environment for extended periods of time and can affect biogeochemical processes in fire-affected soils by altering pH, redox conditions, and organic matter composition.
