Eroded cooling joints

Joints are fractures where little or no movement has occured, forming during cooling of a plutonic rock. In the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the large-scale pattern made by the joints arrangement is a result of the regional stress active during the time of cooling combined with the pluton shape and geometry. When plutonic rocks are explosed to the surface, joints become more visible due to weatherng and erosion by water percolating through them.
