by Konstantinos Kourtidis, Demokritus University of Thrace, Xanthi, Greece
The island of Astypalaia, photographed from an altitude of 10 km against the low sun. On 9 July 1956 at 5:12 in the morning, an earthquake (7.5 Richter) with epicenter around 30 km to the NW, caused a large tsunami that hit the island. The small islet on the left was cut from the main island following this tsunami.
