Monadnock

This image is of Uluru in the desert of Northern Territory of Australia. This shot was taken at sunset, from a vantage point near Kata Tjuta. Uluru is a classic example of a monadnock – in this case, an isolated remnant ridge of erosion-resistant Proterozoic arkose rising above the peneplain. Here is it silhouetted against a brilliant orange sky with an unusual repeated cloud formation that is probably a variety of wave cloud, due to atmospheric waves formed when air flowed over the ridge of Uluru.
