Playa de Taburiente
by Jana Eichel, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Karlsruhe, Germany
View from the rim of the Caldera de Taburiente (La Palma, Canary Islands) into its crater with the braided river section called 'Playa de Taburiente' in the center of the image. Opposed to its name, the Caldera de Taburiente was not formed by the collapse of a magma chamber but by intensive erosion of the Taburiente volcano , forming the heavily dissected landscape of the caldera with its radial network of barrancos. The younger Cumbre Vieja volcano can be seen in the back.
