Salt flat in the Danakil depression
by Dario Zampieri, University of Padova, Padova, Italy
The Danakil depression is the lowest place on the African continent (120 m below the sea level) and probably the hottest place on Earth (1060-1966 T average 34.6°C). The salt deposit is mined by the same handwork in use for centuries. On the background the slope of the Alu volcano (429m), in the northern end of the Earta Ale range.
